Can I Collect Emails From Disqus Commenters?
Disqus does not provide access to commenters’ email addresses for privacy reasons. However, commenters are still one of the highest-intent audiences on a blog because they have actively engaged with your content.
Instead of collecting emails directly, you can build a behaviour-based capture flow that responds to a comment action. This approach respects privacy while turning engagement into a voluntary opt-in.
Gleam supports this through Capture rules that trigger when specific elements appear on a page. Using a CSS Selector rule, you can show an email capture popup when a user clicks a “Post Comment” button or when a confirmation element appears after a comment is submitted.
The Selector rule works by watching the page for a specific CSS selector. You can choose to trigger the Capture when:
- a selector is present
- a selector is not present
- a selector contains a value
- a selector does not contain a value
This makes it possible to detect comment-related UI changes without needing direct access to Disqus data.
You can also combine multiple selectors in a single rule. Using OR logic, a Capture can trigger if any one of several selectors appears. Using AND logic, the Capture only triggers when all specified selectors are present. This gives you fine-grained control over exactly when the opt-in appears.
For example, you can trigger a Capture only after:
- the comment submit button is clicked, and
- a confirmation element appears in the Disqus thread
Once triggered, the Capture can offer something relevant — such as a discount or resource — in exchange for an email address. Because it appears after engagement, it feels contextual rather than intrusive.
Start with a ready-to-use coupon popup Capture template and then tailor the offer to match the blog post topic and the commenter’s intent.
This method turns Disqus comments into a soft lead-capture moment, helping you grow a high-intent email list while preserving a smooth reading and commenting experience.
