What Is the Viral Share Action and How Is a Referral Counted?

The Viral Share Action is the refer a friend entry in a Gleam competition. Every entrant receives a unique share link, and when a person who arrived through that link enters the giveaway, the original entrant is awarded the bonus entries you configured. A referral is counted at that moment, when the referred person enters, and never at the click.

How you set it up

In the action settings you choose how many entries each successful referral is worth, which share buttons appear (email, Facebook, X, WhatsApp, Messenger, Telegram, SMS and more), and whether the share stays locked until the entrant completes other actions first.

What the three numbers mean

A referral passes through three gates, and Gleam records each one. A share is the entrant sending the link somewhere. A share-link click is a person opening it, which Gleam logs day by day. A referred entrant is that person completing an entry. The gap between the second and third gate is where most referrals are lost: in the Gleam Giveaway Benchmarks 2026, Edition 2, a share-link click turned into an entrant 12.8 percent of the time across 4,200 paid giveaways, against 25.2 percent for every other widget view.

What the count leaves out

\n- A click that led to a follow, a purchase or an entry on a later giveaway is invisible\n- Gleam cannot tell you how many entrants shared, since clicks are recorded on the receiving end\n- Judge the action on the share of your entrants who arrived through it

You can start from the Refer a Friend template, which ships with the action already placed.
