What Are the Odds of Winning in a Sweepstakes Promotion?
Odds depend on how many eligible entries you receive, so you can't usually give a fixed number before the giveaway starts. That's why most official rules say something like "The odds of winning depend on the number of eligible entries received."
With one prize and 2,000 eligible entries, each entry has a 1 in 2,000 chance. With five prizes, and each entrant able to win once, it's about 1 in 400. An entrant who earns more entries has better odds than someone with one, so your rules should explain how entries are earned.
In the US, federal law requires sweepstakes sent by mail to state the estimated odds of winning each prize (39 U.S.C. § 3001(k)), and state laws vary, so most sweepstakes rules include the odds anyway. If you offer a free way to enter, it has to carry the same odds as a paid one. Other countries have their own rules.
