How Do I Fix 404 Errors on My Website?

Find the broken URLs first, then fix each one where it starts.

1. Open the Page indexing report in Google Search Console and look for Not found (404).
2. Restore the page if it was deleted by mistake.
3. Add a 301 redirect to the closest live page if the content moved.
4. Fix the link if a typo on your own site points to a page that never existed.
5. Leave pages that are genuinely gone as 404s. Sending everything to your homepage confuses visitors, and Google can treat those redirects as soft 404s anyway.
6. Check the report again after Google recrawls.
