TikTok Business vs Creator Account: What’s the Difference & Which Should You Use?

Not sure whether to use a TikTok Business or Personal account? This guide breaks down the differences, from music access and monetisation to analytics and content tools, so you can choose the best setup for your brand, business, or creator journey.

TikTok Account Types Explained
  • Business Accounts are designed for brands, marketers, and eCommerce stores. They offer tools like TikTok Ads Manager, advanced analytics, and shopping features, but come with restrictions on trending music and certain engagement features.

  • Personal Accounts are the default for individuals, including influencers and creators. While TikTok no longer uses the term ‘Creator Account’, eligible Personal Accounts can still access creator tools such as monetisation features, LIVE gifts, and full access to trending audio.

  • Organisation Accounts are intended for teams or institutions that manage TikTok accounts on behalf of a group, charity, or brand. These accounts offer shared access, additional security, and role-based permissions, though some creator and business tools may be limited.

  • You can switch between account types at any time.

If you're growing on TikTok, choosing the right account type is important. It affects what tools you have access to, how you engage with your audience, and how you can monetise your content.

TikTok currently offers three account types:

  • Personal Account
  • Business Account
  • Organisation Account

TikTok no longer offers a separate Creator Account. Instead, creator tools like monetisation, analytics, and audience features are made available to eligible Personal Accounts.

This is TikTok’s standard account type for individual users, including influencers and creators.

You may get access to features such as:

  • Trending sounds and full music access
  • Monetisation tools like the Creator Fund, tips, and LIVE gifts
  • Duet, Stitch, and other audience engagement features
  • Basic video performance insights
  • Post scheduling via desktop (in some regions)
Note

Not all Personal Accounts automatically get creator tools, eligibility depends on your age, location, and follower count. You’ll also need 1,000+ followers to add a clickable link in your bio.

Business Accounts are designed for companies and brands who want to promote products, run TikTok ads, or use more structured analytics.

You’ll get access to:

  • TikTok Ads Manager for running paid promotions
  • Business Suite and advanced insights
  • TikTok Shop (in supported countries)
  • Commercial Music Library (copyright-safe audio)
  • Immediate website and contact links in bio

However, you will lose access to most trending commercial music and some native engagement tools.

Organisation Accounts are for teams or groups managing a shared presence on TikTok, like charities, institutions, universities, or large organisations.

These accounts offer:

  • Multi-person access with shared login and permission controls
  • Protection for account ownership and branded assets
  • Access to business-related tools such as the Commercial Music Library
  • A setup designed for team workflows and governance
Note

Organisation Accounts may not support all creator or monetisation features. They are focused on collaborative content management and brand safety.

  • If you're a creator or influencer growing an audience and using trends: Personal Account
  • If you're promoting a product, running ads, or managing a brand: Business Account
  • If you're part of a team managing content securely for an organisation: Organisation Account

Many users start with a Personal Account, then switch to Business or Organisation profiles as their goals evolve.

To switch your account type:

  1. Open the TikTok app and go to your profile
  2. Tap the three lines in the top-right corner
  3. Go to Settings and privacy > Account
  4. Tap Switch to Business Account or Switch to Organisation Account
  5. Follow the prompts to complete the setup

To switch back:

  1. Go to Settings and privacy > Account
  2. Tap Switch to Personal Account
Note

When switching from a Business or Organisation Account back to Personal, you’ll regain access to trending music and creator tools, but lose access to business-specific features like Ads Manager and website buttons.
